Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to see a neurosurgeon?
Yes. All appointments require a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner, such as your family doctor, a walk-in clinic physician, an emergency physician or a specialist. Ask them to fax the referral to 1 (905) 228-4111.
Is my appointment covered by OHIP?
Consultations and medically necessary surgery are covered for patients with a valid Ontario health card. Please bring your health card to every visit.
How long will I wait for an appointment?
It depends on how urgent your condition is. Every referral is triaged by the surgical team, and patients who need to be seen quickly may be booked through our Rapid Access Neurosurgery Clinic.
How will I know when my appointment is?
Our office will call you. Please make sure your referring clinician has your current phone number, and answer calls from unknown numbers while you are waiting.
Does seeing a neurosurgeon mean I need surgery?
No. Many of the patients we see do not need an operation. Your surgeon will review your imaging and symptoms with you and discuss all of the options, including treatment without surgery.
Where will my surgery take place?
Surgery is performed at Mississauga Hospital, Trillium Health Partners, 100 Queensway West, across the street from our clinic.
What should I do if my symptoms get worse while I wait?
If you develop a sudden severe headache, new weakness, difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels, a seizure or confusion, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For other concerns, call our office at (905) 291-4506 or speak with your family doctor.
